    The Audit Committee oversees all relevant processes for risk, control and governance. The purpose of the Audit Committee is to provide independent assurance and to support strong financial management and good governance.

    The Committee is made up of seven elected Members of the Borough Council. The Borough Council resolved at its meeting on 18 September that an Independent Chair of the Audit Committee would be appointed.

    Appointment will be on a fixed term basis until the Annual Council meeting of Northampton Borough Council in May 2019.

    Responsibilities will include establishing procedures to govern the Committee’s work and ensure the Committee’s full discharge of its duties and fostering good working relationships and communication among all Committee members. The role of the Independent Chair to the Audit Committee is a non-voting, co-opted Member.

    Meetings take place approximately eight times a year at the Guildhall, Northampton starting at 6pm. Additional meetings of the Committee are programmed into the schedule as required. The Co-Optee allowance for the Independent Chair of the Audit Committee is £4306.94 per annum.

    The successful candidate will have:

    • Demonstrable experience/understanding of risk management, audit and assurance in complex public sector organisation. .
    • An ability to exercise judgement across a broad spectrum including: governance, risk management, finance and control.
    • Effective leadership skills and an ability to take part in difficult discussions with energy and diplomacy.
    • Experience in exercising his/her influence amongst stakeholders.
    • An ability to understand governance in a public sector environment.
    • Understanding of central government policy making, as it applies to audit and risk
    • Previous experience as a member of an audit committee or similar relevant experience.
