Rent arrears a Catch 22 situation

We oppose the bedroom tax

 

The bedroom tax and other benefit changes over the last year or so have seen tenants getting into rent arrears, Northampton tenancy agreements like most other councils state that any arrears must be cleared before any transfer would be considered, This to me seemed total madness if it was stopping people from down sizing to smaller housing and pushing them into still larger arrears, I put this question to NBC and it would seem that a pragmatic approach is being adopted

Question: Is Northampton Borough Council allowing tenants in rent arrears to transfer to alternative Accommodation?

 

Answer: The Council occasionally allows people to move with rent arrears depending on their specific circumstances and/or need.
