Tuesday, April 9th …Northampton a ribbon joining ceremony?

IMG_8723 by Paul Croft

We have seen ministers over the last few weeks spouting on about making the best use of the housing stock we have….. Well I don’t think leaving ANY of our Council housing without tenants months and in some cases year’s fits the rhetoric.

In August (2012) we found a NBC council home that had not been tenanted for over 5 years, I say found, as some think it was overlooked

We now seem to have one that was last occupied in 2005

The administration i.e. Councillor for housing and director of housing have been sent the following email:

Council property left empty for 2,704 days and counting?

Could someone at NBC explain?

Why when we have a long waiting list do we have a flat in St Katharine’s Court that as been void of tenant(s) since 31 October 2005?

(source FOI Disclosure NBC1022-307 which shows it still void on 27 March 2013)

We will keep you in formed of any reply

We have also informed them :

Dear Cllr Markham

As you know Northampton Defend Council Housing have a habit of desktop monitoring the void situation in NBC Housing Stock.

We NOTE that one will have its first anniversary on Tuesday, April 9th

We think it would be fitting to mark this with a ribbon joining ceremony, or something

Will be visiting the location before the anniversary to make sure the void situation is still current.

If NBC would like to give the reason why this property as been void for one year, we would be pleased to hear from you.

Regards,

Mr Norman Adams

Chair Northampton Defend Council Housing

I was quite shocked to see the length of time and number of properties empty on my patch (spring Borough). Though at least they have held off demolishing some blocks of bedsits near Grafton st. I should not be suprised seeing as i once lived in a half empty block on Lumbertubs. Which they ran down till they had an excuse to demolish it. It must cost to repair a vacant property to let it out but they are not forfilling their duty aa a public service by leaving so many empty. Tho they always say they keep some empty 4 emergencies.

  2. Hi Thathurt
The block on Lumbertubs, I think you are on about Robinson House. I agree with you that an excuse was made to demolish the block, taking a large number of the housing stock out, we need more Council Housing, and NBC needs to be building them NOW, Right to Buy as taken 40 homes out of the stock in the last few months …. the council is now spending £2 million to con tenants to vote for transfer to a Housing Association ,,,,, FACT Housing Associations are NOT subject to FOI act and we would find getting information of them a joke
