The story of a Council housing campaign
The people have spoken, said the Editor of the Advertiser; well, the tenants at least, and they did so decisively. In a General Election a vote like this would be considered a landslide. On a turnout of 65.6%, 2,329 (27.7%) voted in favour of ‘transfer’ whilst 6,073 (72.3%) voted against. An Advertiser journalist called it a “crushing defeat” for the Council. What was remarkable about the vote was that it was achieved in the face of a relentless Council propaganda campaign. It was achieved against the odds. How did we manage to
